Vanguard Gallery will present the works of Xiao Jiang, Shen Xuezhe and  Yi Xin Tong’s. For the hometown scenery, three artists used different medias – painting, photography and book to reproduce. As McLuhan said, “Media is information”, The thinking about hometown presented in different forms of expression will reflect more angles and levels.

 

Xiao Jiang depicted outdoor views, empty rooms and daily items, which are miles away from the real “hometown”, but shows the attachment more clearly to everything in hometown. As an Korean artist, Shen Xuezhe’s works focused on Tumen River, which gave birth to this nation. He chose to shoot pictures in black and white film from a long distance, narrativing the history carried by this land silently but emotionally. Meanwhile, Yi Xin Tong chose to creat a book full of internet images from the Wechat of his friends in hometown between 2013.01.25 21:33 and 2014.12.31 22:28. Then, “hometown” seems to have become a virtual object, which can be constructed anytime.

 

Three artists actually asked deeper quetions about “hometown”, “view”. In the age of globalization, how to define “hometown” anymore? As a media, how does the “view” acting on our mind? And how to look upon the difference between it and land, space. All these common questions behind the works worth exploring.
